The equipment used in football includes a ball, two goal posts and two nets. A whistle is also necessary for the referee’s use as are yellow and red cards while nowadays referees also use headphones to communicate from afar with their linesmen.
Linesmen use flags in order to alert the referee to an offside position or foul and the fourth official uses a board to show what the additional time in a match will be. Spare balls are also a must – especially in the fast paced professional games. Players will need their kit and boots while the goalkeeper will wear different colours to the rest of the team in order to stand out.
Needless to say the ball is the most important piece of equipment on the pitch and having spare balls to throw on when one goes out of play allows the game to continue to flow.
The referee needs a whistle in order to stop the play whenever a foul is committed and it will be used to stop and restart play. Red cards are shown to players who break a rule to the extreme and the player will be removed from the pitch for the rest of the game while yellow cards are shown to players who are being warned about a non-serious foul or rule break and the second yellow card shown leads to an automatic red.
It is possible to use other equipment in place of the professional gear and children often use bunched up jumpers as goal posts and some even use coconut shells as balls.
